Burlington sits at the west end of Lake Ontario in Halton Region, with the Niagara Escarpment rising to the north. Each pocket of the city has a different feel, a different housing stock and a different price point, so the first job is narrowing down which areas genuinely fit your plans.
Burlington neighbourhoods at a glance
- Downtown and the waterfront: Brant Street and the lakefront Spencer Smith Park, home to the Brant Street Pier and summer festivals such as Ribfest and the Sound of Music Festival.
- Aldershot: One of Burlington's earliest settled areas, in the west end near the Royal Botanical Gardens, with its own GO station and a mix of condos and detached homes.
- Roseland and Shoreacres: Mature, tree-lined streets close to the lake, with large lots and a mix of original custom homes, rebuilds and renovations.
- Millcroft: A family community built around the Millcroft Golf Course, with many homes backing onto the fairways.
- Alton Village and The Orchard: Newer north-east communities with detached homes, semis and townhomes. The Orchard borders Bronte Creek Provincial Park.
Lifestyle and commuting
Outdoor space is a big part of life here: the lakefront path through Spencer Smith Park, Bronte Creek Provincial Park on the east side, and the Mount Nemo escarpment lookout north of the city. For commuters, Burlington has three GO stations on the Lakeshore West line (Appleby, Burlington and Aldershot), and the QEW, Highway 403 and Highway 407 all run through the city.
Schools
Families can choose from public and Catholic schools run by the Halton District School Board and the Halton Catholic District School Board, with French immersion and private options as well. School boundaries change as communities grow, so I always recommend confirming the school for a specific address with the board before you buy.
Who Burlington suits
Burlington tends to suit growing families who want space and parks, commuters who need both GO and highway access, and downsizers who want to stay near the lake without the upkeep of a large home.
