Oakville is known for its Lake Ontario waterfront, two harbours, a historic downtown and well-kept family neighbourhoods. From a condo near Bronte Harbour to a detached home in Glen Abbey or Joshua Creek, every area has its own feel and price range, and the right choice usually comes down to schools, commute and the kind of street you want to live on.
Oakville neighbourhoods at a glance
- Old Oakville: The original settlement around Oakville Harbour, south of the QEW, with historic homes and the Lakeshore Road shops and restaurants.
- Kerr Village: Along Kerr Street just west of downtown, with walkable streets and a mix of housing.
- Bronte: A lakeside village in the south-west centred on Bronte Harbour, with waterfront parks and a walkable main street.
- Glen Abbey: An established west-end family area, named for the Glen Abbey Golf Course, which has hosted many Canadian Open championships.
- Joshua Creek and Iroquois Ridge: Family neighbourhoods in east Oakville, with good access toward Mississauga and Toronto.
- North Oakville: Newer communities north of Dundas Street, including Glenorchy and Joshua Meadows, with townhomes and detached homes.
Lifestyle and commuting
Oakville life centres on its waterfront parks, ravine trails along Sixteen Mile Creek, the two harbours and a busy dining scene downtown and in Bronte. Commuters use the QEW, Highway 403 and Highway 407, and the Lakeshore West GO line stops at Oakville and Bronte stations.
Schools
Oakville is served by the Halton District School Board and the Halton Catholic District School Board, with French immersion and many private school options. Confirm the school for any address with the board before you buy.
Who Oakville suits
Oakville suits families who put schools and parks first, professionals who need GO and highway access, move-up buyers from Mississauga, and downsizers who want a lakeside condo or bungalow.
