Stoney Creek stretches from the Lake Ontario shoreline up over the Niagara Escarpment on Hamilton's east side. It was a city in its own right until January 1, 2001, when it amalgamated into the City of Hamilton, and it still has a strong community identity. It offers newer lakeside communities, established family streets and quick access to both Hamilton and Niagara.
Stoney Creek neighbourhoods at a glance
- The Old Town: The historic area below the escarpment, home to Battlefield House Museum and Park, a National Historic Site on King Street West.
- Lakeshore and Fifty Point: Newer communities near the water, close to Fifty Point Conservation Area and Confederation Beach Park, with townhomes, condos and detached homes.
- Upper Stoney Creek: Family neighbourhoods above the escarpment with newer subdivisions and parks.
- Winona and the east end: An area with deep agricultural roots, known for the annual Winona Peach Festival.
Lifestyle and commuting
Residents enjoy the Devil's Punchbowl, a dramatic escarpment waterfall where the creek that gave the community its name begins, plus Fifty Point's beach, marina and trails, and Confederation Beach Park on the lake. Niagara's wineries are a short drive east. Commuters use the QEW, and Confederation GO station, at the QEW and Centennial Parkway North, opened on October 27, 2025 on the Lakeshore West line, with trains toward Union Station and Niagara Falls.
Schools
Stoney Creek is served by the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board and the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board. Confirm the school for any address with the board.
Who Stoney Creek suits
Stoney Creek suits families who want newer homes near the lake, commuters heading toward Hamilton, Burlington or Niagara, and downsizers looking at townhomes or condos. Buyers who used to rule out the east end because of the commute may want to take a fresh look now that the area has its own GO train station.
